As January 1, 2016 approaches, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office will start seeing an influx of applications for the Permit to Carry because the five year permits will come due for renewal. The Dallas County Sheriff’s office would like to help make this process as easy as possible.

Training requirements for a NEW Permit to Carry Weapons:

 • Completion of any National Rifle Association (NRA) handgun safety training course.

  • Completion of any handgun safety training course available to the general public offered by a law  enforcement agency, community college, college, private or public institution or organization, or firearms training school, utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or certain other firearms training certifying bodies (such as the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy).

  • Completion of any handgun safety training course offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of a law enforcement or security enforcement agency approved by the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

 • Completion of small arms training while serving with the armed forces of the United States as evidenced by any of the following:

o For personnel released or retired from active duty, possession of an honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions.

o For personnel on active duty or serving in one of the national guard or reserve components of the armed forces of the United States, possession of a certificate of completion of basic training with a service record of successful completion of small arms training and qualification.

  • Completion of a law enforcement agency firearms training course that qualifies a peace officer to carry a firearm in the normal course of the peace officer's duties.

You may also use your Current Iowa Permit to Carry as your qualification requirements but you will be required to fill out a NEW application and pay a NEW applicant fee.  In order for your NEW application to be accepted, you will need to apply 29 days or closer to your current permit's expiration date.  This will not qualify you for a renewal.  Applicants coming from a different county must always apply as NEW applicant and provide a copy of their training.

Training requirements to RENEW a Permit to Carry Weapons:

To renew a Permit to Carry Weapons, a person must complete any of the above forms of training, with exception to the DD214, within the 12 months prior to the expiration of the current permit, or, at the discretion of the permit holder, qualify on a range under the supervision of a certified instructor. Iowa law does not prescribe a particular course of fire, so the instructor determines what constitutes qualification. RENEWAL APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE SHERIFF NO LATER THAN 30 DAYS PRIOR TO THE EXPIRATION DATE ON YOUR CURRENT PERMIT.

Permit Issuance Hours are Monday - Friday  8:00am – 3:30 pm

The Sheriff's Office issues personalized plastic permit cards for individuals issued Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons and a paper permit for individuals who only receive an Annual Permit To Acquire.

Effective July 1, 2015, Weapons Permits may be ordered online with the option to pay using a credit / debit card.  Paper applications will no longer be accepted. There is a $4 convenience fee for all credit / debit card orders or you may opt to pay cash in our office with no additional fee.  Requests submitted as online application require a visit to the Sheriff’s office once the application has been approved.

Cash payments may be made in person at 201 Nile Kinnick Drive N, Adel, Iowa.  Applications completed in person will be completed at the Sheriff’s office using a kiosk and may require an additional visit to the Sheriff’s office once the application has been approved.
