P58/Bridge South of Perry Closed for Replacement

Work continues on replacing the bridge over the North Raccoon River south of Perry.  Please click here for a project map.

The 3.6 miles of paving replacement will begin as soon as the paving contractor can cross the new bridge, which will be around October 1.  The paving replacement will take approximately one month to complete.

The bid letting for the project was held at the Iowa DOT on Tuesday, April 17.  The successful low bidder, Godbersen-Smith Construction Co., Ida Grove, IA,  was awarded the project at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, April 24th.  The bidding of the project was as follows:

The engineer's estimate was $3,320,000.

The contractor has 125 working days to complete the project.  The late start date for the project is May 21st.  The project is expected to last into the fall.

P58 pavementThe existing pavement is a 6" slab constructed in 1971.  The new concrete pavement will be 8" thick and contain additional load transfer rebar at the joints, which will add to the longevity of the pavement.

 

 

 

The existing bridge is classified as structurally deficient with both the substructure and deck ratedP58 bridge poor during the most recent inspection. The existing substructure will be replaced with an abutment and pier on each side of the main channel.  The bridge beams will be made of prestressed-pretensioned concrete.  The deck will feature a high density concrete that withstands chemicals and oils that cause deterioration. Federal Surface Transportation Program monies will provide most of the funding for the bridge ($1,400,000±) and the road ($2,000,000±) projects. The official detour will be Highway 169.
