Every spring, the West Central Area Special Olympics Committee hosts Spring Games and
Aquatics for Special Olympics. The games are held at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
The employees of Dallas County Community Services volunteers each year at this event.

This year the event was on April 14, 2010, and our employees were at Simpson College bright
and early so that as the athletes arrived, we could assist them off of their buses. After Opening
ceremonies, we were able to assist by helping to get the sack lunches that are provided by the
committee organized so that everyone would be able to come up and get their lunches with
ease. Some of our employees helped by pulling coolers with water bottles out to the athletes
who were on the field, by cheering athletes on as the participated in their events and by
helping to run an event to make sure that the athletes for each heat were there and lined up
for their turns. After handing out lunches to the various athletes, their coaches and volunteers
we helped at the awards table by organizing the scores of the athletes to determine which
ribbon they were eligible for. Once the events were over and the ribbons were handed out, we
assisted with clean up.

A few of our team members here at Dallas County Community Services are also West Central
Committee members and so they assisted by organizing volunteer sign up, check in and other
tasks as needed to help to ensure that the event ran smoothly. At the end of the day we all
had a great sense of reward and accomplishment that we are able to volunteer our time to an
event that means so much to so many athletes and their coaches. The athletes and coaches
work extremely hard through out the year for this event and it is great to be able to be a part of
such a wonderful event.
